PROTEST NIGHT show 29 NOV/1 DEC 2010

A few weeks ago I posted this blog about students over at my MR YINKA blog, then last week I posted this about zombies.

Last night I though why not put the two together and do a whole show!
Nah, that isn't isn't exactly how it came about but I guess there was a train of thought going on. I feel like though today's current events (broen out of frustration for the times we're living in and the government policies being introduced) are being reported, there is little balance and a definite diminishing, devaluing and underestimation of the strength of feeling out there so...

I decided to play protest songs to match the mood of the country (UK) where students, (school and university) tube workers, the fire department and the general public have all been protesting and/or striking over cuts and raised fees!

Playlist:
1 Curtis Mayfield - If There's Hell Below
2 Nas - Warrior Song
3 Nas and Damian Marley - As We Enter
4 Steel Pulse - Babylon Makes The Rules
5 Peter Tosh - Stepping Razor *
6 Bad Brains - the youth are getting restless
7 Fela - Zombie
8 Public Enemy - Fight The Power

Welcome to Yinka Radio/Ruby and the Vines

Ruby and the VinesHi!

Welcome to Yinka Radio. A blog where you can hear my Is Black Music? Radio show on Resonance 104.4 FM – resonancefm.com. The show, founded by Art Terry, focuses of left field and avant garde black music – the type which you wouldn’t necessarily hear on mainstream radio. With my shows in particular I also aim to promote and highlight innovative emerging artists and movements such as Afro Punk, Urb Alt, etc. In addition I seek to explore the question posed by the show's name. The influence of black music and black music artists is widespread and part of the foundation of Western Popular music - often in ways that the public may not be aware of and I use the show to illustrate this so don't be surprised to hear some songs you might not associate with the 'cutting edge' - but they are and I explain why.

I joined the show after performing on it as an artist. As someone involved in the music scene I felt it important to ensure that the music and lives of artists in the underground be documented and celebrated now as opposed to being discovered later.

I’ll be posting new and archive shows that i have hosted here so make sure you check back regularly.

Expect to hear music, sessions and interviews from the like sof Saul Williams, Tamar Kali, Janelle Monae, Living Colour, Vernon Reid, Fishbone, Elephant 12, Olympus Mons, Norwood Fisher, Earthdriver and many more.

Ok let’s kick things off with my latest show from Nov 2 (the shows are at midnight on Tuesdays) featuring a session from newcomers Ruby and the Vines (pictured above):
